On July 18, 2019, a tragic arson crime occurred in Japan. It was an arson case against Kyoto Animation, a famous animation production company. The criminal sprinkled gasoline in the studio and set it on fire. The incident killed 35 of the company’s 165 employees. This was the worst murder case in Japan after World War II.
Kyoto Animation is not one of Japan’s largest anime production companies. However, it is highly regarded by anime fans as one of the highest quality anime production companies in Japan.
In this article, I will introduce recommended works of Kyoto Animation that can be seen overseas through Netflix. I think it’s meaningful to inform people around the world about Kyoto animation works, though the sadness of the tragedy can never be healed.
Works which have English subtitles on Netflix
Currently, the following three works have English subtitles on Netflix.
VIOLET EVERGARDEN
A tale where Violet Evergarden connects people as a Auto Memory doll.
This animation is based on a novel which is the first and only Grand Prize winner work of the Kyoto Animation Grand Prize sponsored by Kyoto Animation. It was animated from January to March 2018. The movie version will be released in January 2020.
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
“Haruhi Suzumiya from East Junior High. I’m not interested in ordinary humans. If any of you are aliens, future people, from other worlds, or espers, please come see me. That’s all.”
Suzumiya Haruhi introduced this self-introduction as soon as he entered high school. Although she is a beautiful girl, her personality and behavior were weird and isolated in her class. However, only Kyon, who is a “just human” who talked to Haruhi with curiosity, began to talk.
The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya
On a winter day when Christmas is approaching. Kyon is heading to school and notices that something is different from his usual daily life. Haruhi, who usually sits in the back seat is missing!
More surprisingly, the person sitting in that seat is Asakura, who had disappeared before!

There are no English subtitles, but they are popular works in Japan. I recommend that you watch them when English subtitles are added.

This is a work that has been selected as the most favorite Kyoto Animation’s work in past questionnaires.

Since winning the elementary school swimming club, the protagonists quit swimming. They became high school students and decided to establish a men’s swimming club. A work depicting the days of their swimming club.
CLANNAD
CLANNAD is an animation work derived from a love adventure game created by the game brand “Key”. A story of a school where the protagonist, Tomoya Okazaki, meets a heroine, Nagisa Furukawa, who aims to revive the drama club, and works with various people to rebuild the drama club.
The popularity of the second part following this work is particularly high, but it doesn’t be seen on NETFLIX yet.
